16 November 2009
The 1st Motherbaby International Film Festival was a great success. Saturday evening we had a packed house at Gallery 164 for the showing of 3 beautiful films about birth. There were lots of smiles and laughter. Visuals of naked newborn babies tend to bring that out in people. Sunday we had a powerful group of healthcare providers that included Labor and Delivery Nurses, an OB/GYN, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwives and coordinators for the Priscilla Project in Buffalo. The group viewed one of the films and then we sat and shared our thoughts about women’s health and maternity care in our community. There were great insights and great ideas on how to work to improve the availability and the quality of this type of care in our community.

A BIG THANK YOU to Gallery 164 and to all of the volunteers who made this event a success.

BOLD, Birth On Labor Day, www.boldaction.org, is a global initiative to help improve maternity care to be mother-friendly by using the arts to inspire communities to educate themselves, speak their truth and take action on maternity care issues. This grass-roots event raises awareness and provides a fundraising opportunity for organizations and individuals to support mother initiated dialogue and solutions to today’s maternity care problems.

The Business of Being Born
